Hier you can find a short summary of all my former DXpeditions.

2007 VK9DNX Norfolk Island

Yet Another VK9 - Norfolk Island, Australia (loc RG30 - IOTA OC-005)

VK9DNX 2007
  • After 26 month of business duty in EP without radio the opportunity came just right. Chris DL1MGB prepared an DXpedition to Norfolk for February / March 2007. I joined the team virtually at the last moment and started my trip from my home base in Indonesia, while Chris came 'down under' with 6 other top-notch operators from Germany (Markus DJ7EO, Heye DJ9RR, Mar DL3DXX, Tom DL5LYM, Ben DL6FBL, Dieter DL8OH).
  • Together we started February 14th and were running operations continuously until March 3rd.
  • Despite sunspot minimum we made unbelievable 61,590 Q's with three stations running in parallel on all shortwave bands from 160 up to 10m, 44 percent of them with Europe.
  • Big effort again on lowbands: 2000 Q's on 160m, 6400 on 80m and 8100 on 40m...
  • The island in general and the Pacific Palms QTH in particular were just perfect! Our most favoured place to take a bath in the Tasman Sea was Anson Bay - its beauty now covering our QSL cards. This trip was certainly unforgetable.
  • We also had the pleasure to meet two well known local operators, the hamradio legends Kirsti VK9NL and her husband Jim VK9NS. We helped with some antenna work (Actually, Kirsti doesn't like Jim in his age of 78 years to climb the tower anymore) and spent several hours chatting about past and future of amateur radio. Thank you both again for the warm welcome and your time!
  • What do I do with my membership plaque for the famous 'Brewery' pub now? I'll probably keep it for the next visit...

1999 and 2000 CN8WW Morocco

Five times Morocco (loc IM64)

CN8WW 1999
  • The BCC Millenium project spearheaded by Ben DL6FBL.
  • Together with him and many other operators I went five times to Morocco to participate in the CQ-WWDX contests.
  • We were able to win the multi-multi category 4 times worldwide and did score enough for the world records, both in CW and SSB. On the technical side I was responsible for the equipment lists and miles of cables as well as the 160m-antennas. I did always operate as band captain on 160m.
  • Our unplanned participation in the WAEDC-SSB contest in September 1999 (we just wanted to make a short trip in preparation of the main events) resulted in a sofar unbeaten record score as multi-single DX entry (4,000 QSO and 4,000 QTC).
  • Absolute highlight: The trip back as one of the truck drivers, bringing the 25-ton truck savely back home over 3,000 miles from Morocco to Germany after our last participation in December 2000.

1998 ZL7DK Chatham Island

Chatham Island, New Zealand (loc AE16, IOTA OC-038)

ZL7DK
  • February 1998: With six ops (Manfred DK1BT, Tom DL2OAP, Jan DL7UFN, Falk DK7YY, Mar DL3DXX and me) we've been on tour to Chatham Island.
  • Main target and challenge was the lowband traffic with the Europeans on the antipode side of the globe.
  • The "Chatham-Lodge", managed by Dennis and John and located centrally on the island, was best suited for our purpose.
  • In total we made more than 30,000 QSO in 13 days of operation.
  • That was sofar my last expedition in the team with DK7YY, DL3DXX and DL7UFN. Due to different business assignments and the related separation from my family as well as my concentration on the BCC Millenium project CN8WW there was no time left for further expeditions.

1997 P29VXX Papua-Newguinea

Misima Island, Papua-Newguinea (loc QH69, IOTA OC-117)

P29VXX
  • A journey together with Falk DK7YY, Dietmar DL3DXX and Jan DL7UFN to Papua-Newguinea. Dietmar and I flew directly after our expedition from Bangladesh via Singapore to Port Moresby, were we met Falk and Jan.
  • From this rarely activated IOTA island we made 18,000 QSO, abt. 7,000 of them on lowbands (400 on Topband).

1997 S21XX Bangladesh

Bangladesh - Rajendrapur (loc NL54)

S21XX
  • This Dxpedition was organized by Hannes DL3NEO (now DL3NM) who had some business contacts over there. He invited Dietmar DL3DXX and myself to join him.
  • Because there was not much known activity from Bangladesh, highest priority was assigned to the lowbands.
  • Thus, we've made some 13,000 QSO, 923 of them on 160m, even some of them strait across the pole with the US Eastcoast.
  • This expedition was a total success. Often we were met by local guests, even TV-teams. Dear friends in Bangladesh, thank's again for your great hospitality.

1995 and 1996 VK9CR Cocos (Keeling) Island

Two times Cocos (Keeling), West Island, Australia (loc NH87, IOTA OC-003)

VK9CR 1995
VK9CR 1996
  • In 1995, Rudi DJ5CQ, Dietmar DL3DXX and myself (at that time already in Indonesia as YB1AQS) planned a trip via Christmas Island to Cocos. Rudi did cross the island already several times by plane and wanted finally to put his feet on it. So we did!
  • We've been on West Island directly in the lodge near the airstrip - a dream come true!
  • Unfortunately Rudi went suddenly silent key in the middle of our preparation for the 1996 trip. But Falk DK7YY and Jan DL7UFN were ready to jump in and joined us in a repetition of our 1995 journey "in memoriam DJ5CQ". At least in spirit Rudi was always one of our team members and we did share a lot of memories.
  • Overall we've made more than 27,000 QSO from here.

1995 and 1996 VK9XY Christmas Island

Two times Christmas Island, Australia (loc OH29, IOTA OC-002)

VK9XY 1995
VK9XY 1996
  • Trying to reach Cocos Island from Indonesia, you certainly have to make a stop on Christmas.
  • Thus, when we went to Cocos we also always activated Christmas - with the same team, of course.
  • 1995 we've been in the Flying Fish Cove, unfortunately with limited space especially for the lowband antennas. 1996 we moved up on top of the island into the cricket club near the airstrip and were rewarded with much more lowband contacts.
  • In total more than 20,000 QSO went into the logs from here.

1994 FK/DJ5CQ New Caledonia

Lifou Island, New Caledonia (Loc RG39, IOTA OC-033)

FK/DJ5CQ
  • A trip by Rudi DJ5CQ, Dietmar DL3DXX, Günter DL3XM and Diemo DL4LQM to Lord Howe Island and Lifou.
  • I was at that time actually too busy to leave Indonesia, but finally still found some time to join them at least on the Lifou leg.

1992 HB0/Y33VL Liechtenstein

From the Hamradio fair to Liechtenstein

HB0/Y33VL
  • After visiting the Hamradio fair in Friedrichshafen we (DG1HQX, DL2HTO, DL8WPX, Y33TL, Y33UL, Y33VL, Y43QF, Y44NO, Y54NL) used our spare time and the perfect weather for a trip into the Alp mountains, a DXpedition to the Sareiserjoch.
  • This was the first of my many expeditions together with Dietmar DL3DXX, ex Y33VL.

1991 and 1996 VK9LM Lord Howe Island

Two times Lord Howe Island, Australia (loc QF98)

VK9LM 1991
  • A deam comes true - once in a lifetime down under to see the other end of the globe.
  • In February 1991 Rudi DJ5CQ and I went via Athens to Sydney to visit Robert (now VK4BMI) and his lovely wife Gitta. Later I was able to visit them again a couple of times in their new home in Palm Beach / Goldcoast.
  • From this "basecamp" we started our expedition to Lord Howe Island, which Rudi had visited already a couple of times before.
  • After DJ5CQ suddenly passed away in 1995, Dietmar DL3DXX and I went again to Lord Howe in reminicense to Rudi.

1990 DA0BV Bavaria, Germany

First contacts to the Bavarian Contest Club

DA0BV
  • No expedition, I just moved from Leipzig to Munich after the German re-unification. But this WWDX-CW and -SSB Multi-Multi contest activity from the "Schlaffer-Radiocenter" in Luess, with Renate DH5MBB, Herbert DL3MAA, Wolfgang DL5MAE, Helmut DL7MAE, Albert DL7MAT and Robert DN1MA being three generations of hams in this family, was a major milestone to become a member of the Bavarian Contest Club. Here I met many of the most active members of the BCC for the very first time.
  • Many thank's to everybody there for the wonderful time I've spent in Munich.

1989 OK8BAF Czechoslovakia

For the first time abroad with a radio

  • My very first trip abroad together with Rudi DJ5CQ and certainly one of the first German-German DXpeditions (East meets West).
  • I went by train from Leipzig to Prague, he came by car from Bamberg to pick me up.
  • Start of a deep friendship lasting years which drove us several times together across the globe until Rudi suddenly passed away in November 1995.
